Case Study – Lydia

We met Lydia in January 2019. At the time she was pregnant with her 3rd child but the reason for hospital was Mary her 16 month old daughter had severe malnutrition.

Mary had recently been brought to the malnutrition clinic and was critically ill. She was admitted immediately to the St Vincent Mission Hospital although had no medical insurance to pay for this. Donations made it possible to obtain annul medical insurance for the family once we helped get birth certificates for the children. Mary made a full recovery and Lydia delivered a baby girl Ashley.

education

Kate is the eldest child – 4 years old. She is profoundly deaf.

We instigated a plan for Kate. Funds were raised to pay for Specialist hearing tests and then hearing aids. Further funding was raised to send Kate to a school for the deaf where she completed a term prior to Covid 19 outbreak. This would not be possible without donations. Kate’s chances without this would have been no school, no hearing aids. Kate is a bright girl – always smiling and bags of fun. With your support Kate can attend school to at least secondary level – hopefully then University or Polytechnic vocational skills.

financial support

Very heavy rainfall for a prolonged period has washed away the family toilet facilities.

We are in the process of repositioning the sanitation facility to mitigate future heavy rains. The cost of this is £400.  You can follow the progress below.

The children all had separate admissions to hospital during April-June 2020 with malaria.

We purchased bunk beds and mattresses for the girls to sleep on as opposed to the piece of foam that they slept on the floor previously as well as mosquito nets for all beds.

The family have completed year 1 of NHIF support.

pathways

The family live in a rural area with the ability to farm their shamba and are subsistence farmers with Cornelius occasionally picking up casual day work in the sugar cane fields. We have a plan in place to support them starting a chicken farm. The research has been done as well as the budgets. This will be picked up again in 2021.
