Most medical care in Kenya is not free. Kenya operates a number of medical insurance schemes which cost approximately £70 per family per year. Many families living in poverty do not have access to this kind of money and often go without seeking medical care.

Muhoroni is a very poor rural area of Western Kenya with the average wage coming from agriculture – unskilled work thus making medical care unaffordable. Average casual land labourer (female) day wage is £2. Average pay for taking in washing per day is 90p.

Once we have a family history, we arrange free transport and accompany the mother to obtain the relevant birth certificates. Once in possession of these we can then start the registration for the medical insurance (NHIF).
